3 Secret Speakeasies Hidden in the Hottest Tourist Cities
Speakeasies came into prominence here in the US during the Prohibition era, when the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcoholic beverages was illegal throughout the country. Speakeasies largely disappeared after Prohibition ended in 1933, and are obviously no longer illegal, but you can still find them if you know where to look!
3) Moonshiner, Paris
Next time you find yourself in Paris, I urge you to seek out a very special pizza joint. When you arrive at Pizzeria Da Vito, make your way to the back of the restaurant and into the kitchen’s freezer. That's right, the freezer. Once inside you should be able to spot the secret doorway that will lead you into the bar area. The Moonshiner is an ambient little bar that is open seven days a week from 6pm until 2am. The music played within the space is usually jazz with a mix of blues. This is a great spot for both a full night out or simply an afterwork drink for those residing near the Bastille neighborhood, and one often missed by your average tourist.
2) Sunshine Laundromat, New York City
The entrance to this unique pinball-themed speakeasy is through a washing machine door in the back of this laundromat. I kid you not. With over two dozen games to play from classics to modern faves, nine rotating beers on draft, a bizarre vending machine (where you can get a pregnancy test affixed to a pack of pork gravy for just a few bucks), and an Area 51 arcade game built into an old dryer, the fun is endless. Even a trip to the bathroom doesn't have to interrupt the festivities - the handle is a pinball flipper!
1) The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town, London
Make your way to The Breakfast Club Cafe on Artillery Lane and tell the staff that you are “here to see the Mayor.” They will then direct you to the Smeg branded fridge, which you’ll have to walk through to enter the dingy, candlelit speakeasy. The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is filled with vintage furniture and bizarre wall art, while the cocktail menu is brimming with weird and wonderful concoctions. If cocktails aren’t your thing, there’s also plenty of craft beer and wine to choose from.
